Some people think university professors should spend more time doing research while others think they should spend more time educating students. What is your view?
Recently, a controversy about whether university professor should spend more time doing research rather than educating students was aroused in our society. Some people claim that ,as an expert in a certain field, university professors are obligated to devote themselves to research work , while for me spending more time on educating students is a optimal choice for university professors.
In the first place, there is no doubt that, serving as a teacher , the prime task is to cultivate students rather than doing research , which makes difference between a professor and a specific researcher. People have distinctive occupation have their own duty to fulfill, and only everyone work their tail off to accomplish that will prosper our society. Apparently, the result of failing to fulfill obligation will follow if university professors spend more time doing research.
Moreover, doing researches will inevitably take long time, especially in society nowadays where knowledge accumulates by multiplying, thus it is bond to distract professors from their main teaching work and have a degrading effect on the growth of students.
Worst of all, it will cause a distorted social atmosphere in education since doing researches helps a professor to earn more than simply giving lessons in campus . Driven by the interest motivation, university professor may greatly concentrate on doing researches. Therefore, the standard of education in our country will undoubtedly threatened by a menace to deteriorate.
However, it doesn’t mean that university professor can not do research work and doing it will necessarily bring detrimental result. In stead of it, doing research can keep university professors well informed of state-of-the-art knowledge and thus let students learn more cutting-edge technology from them.
